Prof. Toshio Watanabe
Prof. Watanabe, a long-time resident of Britain, is professor at Chelsea
College of Art and Design, London Institute. An authority on Japonisme who
has concentrated on study of Japanese influence in England, his published
works include books on the image of Japan in Victorian England, for which
he made extensive use of the contemporary magazines of the times. He organized
the exhibition, "Japan and Britain: An Aesthetic Dialogue 1850-1930,"
held at the Barbican Art Gallery (London) in 1991 and Setagaya Art Museum
in 1992. Before accepting his present position, he was at Birmingham Polytech.
